200th Anniversary of the Montreal General Hospital

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Montreal General Hospital (MGH), a pioneer institution of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) that has served the population faithfully through sweeping changes in the Quebec healthcare landscape. This milestone also coincides with the bicentennial celebrations of McGill University. Both institutions are linked by an interesting historical fact: it is the Montreal General Hospital’s founding physicians who established the university’s first academic unit – Canada’s first faculty of medicine – in 1829.

To mark this important anniversary, several activities will be organized throughout the year, starting with a large-scale virtual exhibition launched on March 31st. Created by the Art and Heritage Centre of the MUHC and the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, the virtual exhibit is a journey through 200 years of hospital history, medical innovation and exceptional individuals and teams.

CODE LIFE INTERVIEWS

As part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Montreal General Hospital (MGH), the Montreal General Hospital Foundation is launching a series of live webcasts: CODE LIFE INTERVIEWS. This series is organized in collaboration with the McGill University Health Centre and the MGH 200th Anniversary Organizing Committee.

Episode 5: The Role of Philanthropy

The Montreal General Hospital has survived and thrived thanks to two centuries of community support – from donations of time and money from the community, to major fundraising efforts by some of Montreal’s most illustrious families.
For this episode, we gathered three guests with exceptional backgrounds who all have one goal in common: to support the medicine of the future for all Quebecers. This support is in large part philanthropic, today even more so than ever.

Episode 4: Mental Health

Prior to 1946, the treatment of psychiatric disorders at the MGH fell under the umbrella of the Department of Neurology. We reunited three amazing professionals to discuss the evolution and challenges of mental health care in today’s world: Dr. Karine J. Igartua, Dr. Howard Margolese and Maryse Godin.

Episode 3: What role does the MGH play as a teaching hospital?

Building on the MGH’s history of excellence and multidisciplinary teamwork, its clinicians and researchers are training new generations of doctors, continually pushing the boundaries of innovation in medicine, and providing patients with new and improved treatments.In this episode, our guests, Dr. Geneviève Genest and medical leaders Dr. Gold and Dr. Feldman discuss the MGH’s role both as a teaching hospital and as the birthplace of major medical discoveries, and offer us a glimpse into the future of medicine.

Episode 2: How Pandemics Shape Medicine

A hundred years after the deadly Spanish flu, the MGH is facing a deadly and devastating pandemic once again. Our panel examines the consequences of COVID-19 on the hospital, the staff and the health services, as well as research, at home and abroad, and how the experience of COVID-19 will help shape medicine and define the future of healthcare.

Our first Code Life Interview episode explored Innovation at the MGH – MUHC with guests Dr. Rhian Touyz, New Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Ri-MUHC, Dr. Gerald Fried, Co-Director of the Clinical Innovation Program (CLIP) at the RI-MUHC, and Dr. Edward Harvey, trauma surgeon at the MUHC, surgery professor at McGill University and serial medical entrepreneur.

On April 21st, Joseph B. Martin. MD, PhD, presented a historical narrative of the founding, in the same year (1821-22), of two great hospitals; the Montreal General and the Massachusetts General.
