Two New State-Of-The-Art Hybrid Operating Rooms Now in Service at the MGH
The Montreal General Hospital (MGH) hosts one of the busiest trauma centres in the province. The Dr. David S. Mulder Trauma Centre serves over 2 million people in a territory that includes Highway 40 to the South Shore of Montreal, the Montérégie region and Northern Quebec, including Cree and Inuit communities – over 60% of Quebec’s population. It is therefore essential that medical teams provide the best possible care in operating rooms that can receive the most seriously injured patients.
Rethinking the Environment for Complex Surgeries
What began with the need to replace and improve the ventilation system in the operating rooms at the MGH became an opportunity to create the best possible environment for performing complex, life-saving surgeries on patients from all over Quebec, thanks to the medical leadership in trauma and surgery.
Saving Time: Saving Lives
In trauma care, early control of bleeding is essential to achieving optimal results. The traditional approach involves performing surgery in the operating room and radiology in the angiography room, which can require difficult decisions about where and when to transport patients.
These new rooms enable a completely redesigned process. This saves precious time, since all the equipment needed for diagnoses and decision-making is located within the room.
Leveraging Philanthropy to Benefit Patients
While the government funded most of the initial renovations needed to provide care, our foundation’s investment, thanks to your generous support, took this great project to the next level.
With state-of-the-art equipment, and the centralization of procedures in a single room, the new hybrid ORs now saves crucial minutes for trauma patients. They also facilitate minimally invasive surgery and the use of robotic surgery.
We Can’t Thank You Enough
The MGH Foundation has already invested $2 million in this major renovation project, and continues its efforts to complete the funding, which will take the MGH’s surgical mission to the next level. These major renovations are also an integral part of MUHC Surgeon-in-Chief Dr. Feldman’s ambitious “Future of Surgery” plan, for which the Foundation is seeking to raise $35 million.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in this investment. You have made it possible for nurses, surgeons and anesthesiologists to provide the very best care for people who have been injured or require complex surgery.
We, along with the medical teams, patients and their families, are immensely grateful.
THANK YOU!
