They may be physically located at a world-class hospital in Montreal, but the Trauma team at the MGH is fighting on the front lines of the conflict in Ukraine, saving lives of people they will never even meet.

What is the Centre for Global Surgery?

Part of the Trauma Division, The Centre for Global Surgery (CGS) team members work actively to share their knowledge around the world, in an effort to reduce injuries and mortality rates. They have developed education, research, and multidisciplinary exchange programs to help low- and middle-income nations and countries going through a crisis set up trauma systems which, as they have in Quebec, can drastically reduce mortality rates.

The CGS has been collaborating with Ukraine for the past decade on trauma research and training initiatives. At the time, we never imagined that they would be in this situation. To support their healthcare teams, our partners requested teaching materials for basic life support and lifesaving procedures that can be done by non-surgeons. – Dr. Dan Deckelbaum, Co-Director of the Centre for Global Surgery

How is the CGS supporting Ukraine?

The Centre’s team is currently in touch with colleagues in major cities in Ukraine, providing telehealth support and teaching modules for the training of family physicians and others dealing with numerous injured victims. This team has worked and taught in the hospitals touched by the bombings. They are experts at implementing education programs in resource-limited settings.

This is an unbelievable situation. It is very sobering to speak with our colleagues in Ukraine. Sharing our expertise in this time of crisis is what the Centre for Global Surgery is all about. – Dr. Tarek Razek, Co-Director of the Centre for Global Surgery
