For the Love of Our Patients

Unique in North America, The Peri Operative Program (POP) relies on a simple concept: the better shape you are in going into surgery, the faster your recovery will be after surgery. The program is based on three pillars: exercise, nutrition and psychological care. Baptised ‟The Happy Clinic” by its patients, the program makes a significant difference in lives of people like Pennie, who have regained their health and smiles through this program supported entirely by community donations.

Loving others has no age

June and her husband, Dr. Cooke, are both Montreal General Hospital volunteers. Every Thursday, they get up before dawn to be at their jobs by 6:30 a.m. After practicing for many years at the MGH, she as a nurse and he as an obstetrician, the Cookes now donate their time to help patients and staff, driven by their dedication to their profession, the community and the MGH. Little Mechanical Angel

It was on a September day in 2017 that the unthinkable happened: while Yoan was finishing his lunch hour at work, his heart stopped beating. Unthinkable because he didn’t have any known heart condition, because he wasn’t in the middle of a hockey game or going through a time of great stress, and especially because he was only 18 years old. Luckily, he was able to receive cutting-edge care at the Montreal General Hospital — care that led to better understanding of what caused the incident and avoiding the worst for his little brother Logan, who is barely seven years old. For six years, a group of volunteers led by Maria D’Iorio has organized a big fundraising dinner in support of the MGH’s Colorectal Cancer Surgery Centre.
